Picture a stiff, weightless map of 34250 with every resident standing at home, everyone weighing the same. The point where the map balances is the mean center.

Latitude and longitude are averaged separately. Distance does not matter here, only which side of the line each person lives on. A faraway community shifts the median no more than a nearby one, which is what makes it different from the mean.

Cut the place's outline out of cardboard and the empty cutout balances at the geographic center. It is computed from the boundary shape alone. Population plays no part, so for a lopsided place it can sit far from where most people live.
