Center of population of 33570

Each dot is one 2020 census block, sized by its population.

What each mark means

Mean center
Where the place would balance if every resident weighed the same.
How it's computed

Picture a stiff, weightless map of 33570 with every resident standing at home, everyone weighing the same. The point where the map balances is the mean center.

Latitude and longitude are averaged separately. For latitude: take every populated 2020 census block in the place, multiply its population by the latitude of its center point, add up those products, and divide by the total population. That is the mean latitude. The mean longitude is a weighted average of the longitudes, using each point's population times the cosine of its latitude as the weight — a degree of longitude spans less ground the farther it sits from the equator, and the cosine accounts for that shrinkage. Those two averages together are the mean center.

Distance matters here. A community far to the north pulls the point north in proportion to both its population and how far away it is.

Median center
Half the population lives north of this point and half south; half east and half west.
How it's computed

Latitude and longitude are computed separately here too. For latitude: sort every populated 2020 census block from south to north and add up population as you go. The latitude where the running total first reaches half the place's population is the median latitude. Repeat from west to east for the median longitude. The two lines cross at the median center.

Distance does not matter here, only which side of the line each person lives on. A faraway community shifts the median no more than a nearby one, which is what makes it different from the mean.

Geographic center
Where the place would balance if it were made of cardboard.
How it's computed

Cut the place's outline out of cardboard and the empty cutout balances at the geographic center. It is computed from the boundary shape alone. Population plays no part, so for a lopsided place it can sit far from where most people live.

Where people are counted from

Every populated 2020 census block whose center falls inside 33570 contributes its center point and its 2020 census population. The centers above are computed from those units and nothing else.
