About the Drive Time tool

The drive time tool maps the area reachable by car from any point in the United States and estimates the population inside it. Click the map or search an address to drop a pin. The tool draws drive time areas for 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes and reports the population, land area, and density of each one.

Travel times are computed on the OpenStreetMap road network, so each shape follows the roads actually reachable from your point. Population comes from 2020 census blocks. Income, rent, age, and other indicators are estimated from American Community Survey data and compared to national averages.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the population data come from?

Population counts come from the 2020 United States census at the block level. A census block counts toward an area when its center falls inside the area. Income, rent, age, and other indicators are estimated from the American Community Survey.

How are drive time areas calculated?

Travel time areas are computed on the OpenStreetMap road network using typical speeds for the mode of travel. Each shape follows the roads and paths actually reachable from the point you pick.

How accurate are the numbers?

The numbers are estimates. Census blocks are small in cities and larger in rural areas, so a tiny area may hold too few blocks to measure and is marked as such. Indicator values are flagged when the underlying data does not cover the whole area.

Can I use this for site selection or trade area analysis?

Yes. The tool answers common site selection questions, such as how many people live within a drive time of a location and how the surrounding area compares to national averages for income, age, and housing.
