How it's computed

Picture a stiff, weightless map of Ruskin, FL with every resident standing at home, everyone weighing the same. The point where the map balances is the mean center.

Latitude and longitude are averaged separately. For latitude: take every populated 2020 census block in the place, multiply its population by the latitude of its center point, add up those products, and divide by the total population. That is the mean latitude. The mean longitude is a weighted average of the longitudes, using each point's population times the cosine of its latitude as the weight — a degree of longitude spans less ground the farther it sits from the equator, and the cosine accounts for that shrinkage. Distance does not matter here, only which side of the line each person lives on. A faraway community shifts the median no more than a nearby one, which is what makes it different from the mean.

Cut the place's outline out of cardboard and the empty cutout balances at the geographic center. It is computed from the boundary shape alone. Population plays no part, so for a lopsided place it can sit far from where most people live.

Why the median center is a band

A census block reports a total. It does not say where inside it those people live. Place everyone in each census block at its southern edge and the median line falls as far south as the data permits. Place them at the northern edge and it falls as far north. Any line between the two could be the true median. East and west work the same way. The band covers that range.

We weigh over 2020 census blocks when an area holds at most 25,000 of them, and over census tracts above that. Tracts are larger than blocks, so weighing over tracts gives a wider band. The width reflects the size of the weighing unit, not the distribution of people.
